Flowers are delicate and strong, they bring joy and deep breaths, they encourage movement, gift giving, thoughtfulness, and a feeling of letting go. To me, they inspire one to think about the light and wonder in creation and to be reminded of the fragility and blessing of each breath, ray of sunshine, and each nourishing sip of tea. Flowers remind me of many important aspects of how women were created to grow and birth babies; with freedom of movement, thoughtful assistance of caregivers, breathing deeply and allowing the process of birth to unfold.
I chose flowers to help represent my doula vision in part because I heard a story of a woman who requested her doula bring a dozen roses with her to the birth. During each contraction (or wave or rush- if you choose to call it this) she breathed deep into the bundle of blossoms and it allowed her to relax her lips, shoulders, and it calmed her nerves. This imagery impacts how I would like to encourage you when creating your birth vision to do just that- ENVISION the space you would like to create; the scents, lights, providers/support people, the clothes you choose to wear, the encouraging mantras, and comfort items that will help bring you through this wild and wonderous thing called birth.
Having a birth doula allows you to have a person whose sole purpose is to pamper you for one full day as you enter into motherhood.
